About Historic-Battles

What is Historic-Battles?

Historic-Battles began as a one-man project by Stian A. Stokken in June 2002. Stian had been searching for a good internet discussion site on military history, but couldn't find one that was suitable, so he decided to create one himself. As the site grew, a need for extra moderators and eventually co-administrators became a necessity. We now have several individuals from all around the world acting as moderators and administrators for this site and we have over 200 members.

How can I help keep this site going?

If you like this site and would like to see it continue to grow, there are two ways you can help ensure that.  One is to purchase books through our Amazon Affiliate Bookstore.  We have a few recommendations, but you are not limited to those selections.  If you follow the Amazon link and purchase any item through Amazon, we will get a small commission.  Another way you can help out is by a personal donation via PayPal.

Founder - Stian A. Stokken

Stian was born in 1974 and lives in Norway.  He studied Philosophy and Literature at the University of Bergen and also studied Economics at the University of Bo.  He now works as a bookseller in Bergen, Norway.  For two years Stian was the sole administrator for Historic-Battles, but due to busy schedules, he eventually had to have assistants.  Ultimately Stian gave ownership up to them, but Stian is and will always be recognized as the "father of Historic-Battles.com."  He will always be welcome and we look forward to a day when he will be able to rejoin us on a regular basis.

Though the site has expanded over time, the main focus is and will remain the discussion forum, which is the main concept that Stian had in mind when creating this entity.

I come from a long line of witnesses to history, stretching from Bavaria, to Colonial America, to Modern Day. I am also a 'Cold Warrior' who served in the Atlantic & Pacific Fleets of the US Navy. I was born & raised in California, and after my military service, enjoyed a rewarding career working with major corporations throughout the USA and abroad. I currently live in Hawaii and own a business which services 'certain government agencies' & corporations throughout the Pacific region.

Nick (Case) - Administrator

I live in Canberra, Australia, and studied Economics and Political Science at the Australian National University. I now work for the Australian Government and spend an unhealthy proportion of my salary on history books. My areas of particular interest are the Pacific Theatre of WW2 and military operations since the end of the Cold War.

Nick was also the first member to join Historic-Battles.

Van (Mertox) - Administrator

I was born in 1971 and live in Mississippi, USA. I studied Fine Arts and History, but dues to circumstances beyond my control, never graduated. I currently work as a Network Administrator, though deep down, my true love is still history. I was in the U.S. Army for a while and my wife is a former Marine. In a fight, being the Marine she is, she usually wins!

Born in 1978, university graduate-security studies. I have interest in WW2 and post WW2 history, with emphasis on military history and military technology. In my spare time I assemble models. since I couldn't make a decent Tyra Banks I switched to WW2 era dioramas and figures. Other interests include photography and reading history books.

I grew up in South America, the first history books my father bought for me were about WWII, the first photo of a WWII fighter I ever saw was one of the "Spitfire."  As I got older my interest in history grew, of course. I moved to the USA and Portland eight years ago, I got married and went about working and going back to college. I keep buying all the books I can, the US offers so many opportunities to get great books that I'm living in heaven.

I am a Montana boy, but only a third generation American since my Grandparents (with the exception of one Grandmother) were all born in Norway and moved to America after WW1.  I was born in 1949 on the Montana Hi-Line near the Canadian border I have been a farmer/rancher at heart (if not deed) all my life.  I graduated from a small high school in central Montana as senior class president, and  a member of the National Honor Society in 1967.  I then went to college with a "partial" football scholarship that fall, forfeited my scholarship to enlist in the US Navy the following year where I served four active and two reserve before being honorably discharged as a machinist mate second.  My wife and I married in 1970, I have two adult sons (one ex-Navy, one still USMC).

Mihai Chirita is from Bucharest, Romania.

I liked history from general school, but I realised very early that the career in that domain is very limited. So I decided to start a career in economics - the main reason for historical events IMO. I graduated the The Academy of Economic Studies, Bucharest, in 1999 and right now I am in the second semester of a 3 semester master in business administration in the same academy.
I like to study/look at history from the big picture point of view and to understand WHY things happend the way they did. I love "what if" scenarios - if you can create a credible one, that means that you understand history.

Rahul - Moderator

Rahul Reddy was born and raised in Michigan.

I'm currently studying at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. My interest in history started with a fascination with WW2 history when I was young and has grown to encompass other historical periods. My family is originally from India so the history of that country interests me as well.

Born and raised in Georgia, and like many a southroner, was force fed civil war history. Became interested in the Napoleonic Wars and eventually gained an interest in the European horse and musket wars prior to Napoleon. Lately I haven't had as much time to devote to military history... my interest in history is diverse. I also enjoy cultural historical topics, the evolution of civilization, philosophical and religious history, etc. I also dabble in reading physics (Brian Greene, for instance), astronomy, biology (Dawkins is a current favorite) and other scientific fields that happen to catch my eye. But I spend most of my time with "literature", religion and mythology.

I've lived nearly all my life in Finland (currently Helsinki), with the exception of three years I lived in Italy as a child. I study Social Anthropology at the University of Helsinki. I'm mostly interested in non-state societies and their history. Regarding history my main interests are in contemporary history and civil wars and revolutionary movements. Photographs and films are another topic I'm very much intereted in. I've done civilian service, since I didn't want to serve in the Finnish Defence Forces for ethical reasons.

Whiskey Brother, or just Mike to my friends. I was born in Los Angeles California near the height of the Vietnam War, Mid-summer of 1970. I'm what you would call a "Self-Educated" man, as most all of what I know from History came from my own personal study into the matter. Some of this interest is because my family happens to have some very interesting individuals who have had some impact on the state of this Country.  My family has a long and distinguished history on the North American Continent, beginning in 1621, but I am very proud of the fact that in 1776  my Ancestor Richard Henry Lee signed the Declaration of Independence,- being the second man to stand up and call for independance from British Rule.  His Nephew, my Great, Great, Great, Uncle, was General Robert E. Lee, who happens to be one of my personal heroes because of his devotion to Duty and Honor, and I have always admired  his fantastic ability to command troops on the battlefield, even when faced with what seemed overwhelming odds.
